How to buy Siacoins

You need Siacoins to use SiaStream. If you're an existing Sia user, you've got them. If you're new, you'll need to buy them from an exchange, or have another Sia user send them to you.

Where to get them

The easiest way is using the built-in Transak integration.

Siacoins are also available on a number of major cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance, Bittrex, Kraken, Upbit, Poloniex, Huobi, OKex, and HitBTC. Get the full list here.

Some exchanges support direct fiat (local currency) to Siacoin purchases, but others require you to buy Bitcoins, Ethereum, or other crypto to make your purchase. We’ll walk you through the process of buying your first Siacoins.

Transak

In the SiaStream dashboard, click on Deposit.

Now click on Buy With Transak, and follow the process to buy Siacoins directly in-app with your credit or debit card and have them sent to your SiaStream wallet. Transak currently has a $35 minimum purchase.

Using an exchange

This example will use Bittrex, a US-based exchange that allows you to trade regular US dollars (USD), BTC, ETH, or USDT for Siacoins. But the general process will be similar no matter which exchange you use.

  • Sign up for an account with Bittrex. The process is simple, but fairly long and requires identity verification along the way. Almost every crypto exchange will require this.
  • Once signed up, find the market you’re interested in. Purchase directly with USD or Bitcoin.
  • Make a trade by specifying how many Siacoins you want to buy, and at what price.
If this is your first time purchasing crypto, start with a small amount until you’re comfortable with it.
  • Now you have the Siacoins in your Bittrex wallet, but exchange wallets aren’t a good place to store crypto, and you can’t use it for its intended purpose - using SiaStream.

How to get them in SiaStream

In your SiaStream dashboard, take a look at the Balance box. This shows you the amount of Siacoins currently in your wallet, as well as their USD value.

You need to put Siacoins in here, so click the Deposit button. You'll see a bunch of numbers and letters appear. This is a Siacoin address, and it will always link to your (and only your) wallet forever.

Use this address as your Send To address from an exchange or another instance of Sia. They'll appear and be ready to be used once the blockchain confirms the transfer, which usually takes anywhere from 5-20 minutes.
